I’ve got my hands on the plow I’ve got this sweat on my brow And if you could see me now, you’d say There’s a man with a dream I got these boots on my feet I’ve got this dirt on my skin And I’ll work until I win I’m a man with a dream I’m a man with a dream Working hard, digging in I’m a man, flesh and bone Work the land then I go on home And it’s a long row to hoe For the seed I’ve gotta sow I got a long way to go I’m a man with a dream I’m a man with a dream Working hard, digging in I’m a man, flesh and bone Work the land then I go on home And I’ll answer the call And I’ll rise with the dawn Gonna work until I fall I’m a man with a dream

Lying in a creek bed under a Comanche moon Watching out for headlights going to make the crossing soon I’ve got a prayer on my breath and a thousand dollars in my jeans All of my saving to be paid to El Coyote On the Other Side On the Other Side On the Other Side There’s a better life waiting for me Somewhere on the Other Side Its a wide swift river, mi amigo, better learn to swim Gotta run fast on the highway or you’re gonna get hit Keep your ass down or your bound to get a bullet in it You don’t want to wind up another dead Mexican On the Other Side On the Other Side On the Other Side There’s a better life waiting for me Somewhere on the Other Side I’ll was dishes in your restaurants I’ll tar rooftops in your blazing sun I’ll pick oranges and wash your cars I’ll sell water on your boulevards I’ll take any job you don’t want I’ll work hard at your…discarded dream El Coyote took all of my money and he left me here Lying face down with a vigilante standing near He’s got a homemade badge and a rifle and he smells like beer He says ‘Welcome to America, now you’re gonna disappear To the Other Side To the Other Side To the Other Side Mother forgive me I’m coming to the Other Side On the Other Side On the Other Side On the Other Side There’s a better life waiting for me Somewhere on the Other Side

Billys been living at the old motel By the Army/Navy and the Taco Bell Billy’s been sober going on three years But on a day like this one he could use a beer So he pulls his shirt and his sneakers on And he walks down the road in the blazing sun When the bell on the door of the Quik Mart rings Billy says a prayer, “God, give me strength” He walks by the coolers filled with ice cold beer Walks to the coffee pots way back in the rear Eight packs of sugar and he fills it to the rim Spend one dollar twenty five The Price of Redemption Billy sits in his room with the TV on Five long hours till the work day starts Picking up class rooms pushing a broom He’s got the night time shift at the local school He’s got a set of keys that open every door Takes out the garbage, cleans the toilets, and waxes the floors He works a forty hour week for minimum Seven dollars fifty cents… The Price of Redemption Sometimes he wonders ‘Where did I go wrong?’ The night things shattered still cut him to the bone The things I did, all my sins when I was drunk Man, I wish I never ever touched a drop Billie had a wife but she went away Still can’t remember her name some days But they have a daughter and she’s nine years old She has his eyes and she’s got his should First of the month on the dot he pays the rent Picks up extra work anyplace he cans Buys just what he needs and the rest goes to the kid He’d buy her anything she wants Thats the Price of Redemption

Well we wake in the dark with our ears to the ground From across the black water comes a rumbling sound Make way, make way, they say, for the brave engineers Come to lay down a pipe line on a fresh trail of tears They’ve brought their machines to dig up this ground Drills and bulldozers and cranes all around Their choppers fly low blowing dust in our eyes And there’s men there with rifles and dogs on the lines And they say… ‘Move along, Tonto, get the fuck out of here Go run along like a good Indian’ The heart off this bedrock the heart of this soil Will be Pastures of pipelines flowing with oil Pastures of pipelines flowing with oil Pastures of pipelines flowing with oil This land is the land where the ancestors lay Deep in the heart of Uci Maka The rain carries tears when their shovel split bones This land is their skin, this land is their home And they say… ‘Move over Injun, there’s no way to stop us You want your water but we need our profits The heart off this bedrock the heart of this soil Will be Pastures of pipelines flowing with oil Pastures of pipelines flowing with oil Pastures of pipelines flowing with oil Your handshakes a falsehood, your eyes cannot hide They reveal the darkness and the greed that’s inside Every word that you’ve spoken all revealed to be lies Every promise you’ve broken, every treaty you’ve signed So go ahead, devil, get the fuck out of here We’ll stand where we and we’ll fight without fear The heart of this bedrock the blood of this soil Like the blood that mingles with the blood of us all The blood that mingles with the blood of us all The blood that mingles with the blood of us all

Babyface, Babyface, what’d you do? You tore this country right in two Spreading them lies and burying truth Babyface, Babyface, shame on you… Babyface, Babyface, look what you’ve done The whole damn country come undone Everyone divided and you can’t trust one Babyface looking like he’s just begun Babyface looking like a headlight deer Telling shareholders what they want to hear Senator committee says you gotta do better But all he’s done is change his name to Meta Babyface, Babyface, what about the kids? You know damn well what the research said But when the money rolls in I guess it’s hard to resist Even when it puts them kids at risk Dirty corporation, dirty politicians Babyface selling his dirty algorithms You can change your name, you can change your look But you can’t wipe the shame off your dirty Facebook Babyface Babyface it’s our fault too Can’t put all the blame right on you But we got problems that you just can’t mend So maybe it’s better if we’re just not friends Babyface gonna teach the world a lesson Never trust a billionaire who looks pubescent If you don’t want your privacy sold down the river Better think twice before you post cat pictures

He said ‘yes, sir’ He said ‘no, sir’ He said ‘I can just walk home, sir’ If you let me Just let me go home… I’m a husband I’m a father Was the birthday of my daughter Won’t you let me Just let me go home? He said ‘I’ve got a sister lives right up the road I can go there, it’s no trouble at all… Just grab my things and lock my car I’ll be no trouble, Officer Won’t you let me, just let me go home…’ I was hungry I was tired Just drove in from Carolina Won’t you let me Just let me go home? Yes, you’re right, sir I was drinking And I guess you found me drinking Won’t you let me Just let me go home? We both know how this story ends I’ll be polite, but you’re not my friend Once you take me down to the ground There’ a good chance that I’ll never get up Never see my babies again Never tell them Daddy loves them Never get to see them grow But You’re just doing your job, I know Won’t you let me Just let me go home…? He said ‘yes, sir’ He said ‘no, sir’ He said ‘I can just walk home, sir’ If you let me Just let me go home…

Flint 05:01
Water Water Give me water My throats burning Water Water Good clean water Not this poison In my blood In my veins In my home In my drain In my throat In my bones In my skin Water Water My son, my daughter’s Bloodstreams full of it No one’s listening Somebody lies Somebody talks Someone denies Then somebody walks And it’s always the same None take the blame They just walk They just walk They just walk walk away While my headaches get worse My hands always sweat There’s hair in my drain And I can’t catch my breath While my babies, my babies My children they cough Cough up their life Mouth full of blood No one’s listening… What kind of monster that worships the dollar Would poison the water they drink These sons and these daughters Their skin different colors They pay the original sin In Flint Water Water Give me water My throats burning…

It'll all end up in tears Hand to heart through all your years So make a vow that while you're here That you'll always stand for love Love's the dirt and love's the seed Love's the only god you need Love can teach the blind to see So stand for love Love's a stance and love defies Love's a dance and love's a fight Love is standing for what's right So stand for love Stand for love So plant your seed and watch it grow For what you reap is what you sow And what you put into this world Make sure it always stands for love May it always stand for love May it always stand for love Stand for love

about

What we reap...

This album began twenty years ago with a tattoo on my right bicep. A representation of a painting by Jean Francois Millet called ‘The Sower’, painted in 1850. An image of a man…a peasant farmer. His shoulders hoisting a sackful of seeds, striding through brown barren fields, under skies that hold both dread and promise.
His right hand methodically dipping into the sack, pulling out great fistfuls of seed and casting them to the ground for the coming seasons harvest .
Over the years and decades the tattoo that I carry on my arm has taken on changing symbolism for me. I recognize it more and more for what it simply is.
A very simple but profoundly important lesson.
The hard labour, the back breaking commitment… the planting of seeds…the rising before dawn to work the day through till the sun sets. All in the service of sustenance. The promise of the coming harvest.
Simply put, what we lay into this earth, into our lives, into our own spirits, into our communities…is what we eventually harvest, for good and for not…

What we sow...

Living in America these last years has been the witnessing of some terrible and bitterly divisive harvests…a great poisoning of our very sustenance. Ugly weeds chocking our spirits are rooted deep and the fruit that is plucked is often as not black with rot in the center.
This is an album that for me is my own chronicling of such times. It is an album of stories.
Each one in their own way is a story of those people forgotten, passed over, ignored…who find their own ways to speak out, to defy, to rally and to rise, even to sing. These are songs of resilience. These are all love songs, in their way.
The story, the true story…always, always, comes down to people…and the presence or absence of love.

It begins with a dream. It ends with a prayer.
